Semaphore Signals

Droitwich Spa
A semaphore junction signal at Droitwich Spa, showing 'proceed' for the main (right-hand) route. The arms are mounted at different heights, representing the relative speeds of the routes to which they apply. The left-hand arm applies to the Down Loop, and the right-hand one is for the Down Main. The signal arms are of the centre-balanced type introduced by the Great Western Railway for use where sighting or clearance problems are present. The white diamond sign is fitted in error, since a signal post telephone is provided. (Photo taken 25 August 2005)

Shrewsbury
At Shrewsbury, there is a less common variety of centre-balanced signal arm that has the lamp placed on the left-hand side of the pivot. This signal is controlled from Severn Bridge Junction signal box, the massive structure visible on the right. (Photo taken 27 August 2005)

New Cumnock
Signal number NC30 is the Up Starting signal at New Cumnock. Co-acting semaphore arms are provided because of an overbridge on the approach to the signal. The arm at the top of the post is for long-distance viewing above the bridge, while the lower arm is provided for close-up viewing. (Photo taken 27 April 2006)

Hednesford
A semaphore stop signal at Hednesford, which is permanently fixed in the 'on' position. This signal was provided in 1989 in connection with the reintroduction of passenger services between Walsall and Hednesford. It allows Down direction passenger trains to terminate at the Up platform before turning back towards Walsall. (Photo taken 25 April 2008)

Carmuirs East Junction
A semaphore splitting distant signal on the approach to Carmuirs East Junction. Yellow upper quadrant distant arms are fitted, both of which are seen here in the 'on' position. The arms are mounted at different heights, representing the relative speeds of the routes to which they apply. The left-hand arm applies to the Down Branch, and the right-hand one is for the Down Main. The higher distant arm formerly had a semaphore stop arm mounted above it. (Photo taken 13 December 1994)

Worcester Shrub Hill
Signal SH80 is situated midway along Platform 1 at Worcester Shrub Hill station. The signal's unusual disc form is consequent to it being mounted in the restricted space underneath the station canopy. The larger disc is a main signal, and is seen cleared for a running movement. The smaller disc below is a subsidiary signal endorsed "CO" for 'calling-on'. The diamond sign indicates that no signal post telephone is provided but a train detained at the signal is protected by a track circuit. (Photo taken 27 June 2013)
